they do not swap, the I6 three speed is a weak a$$ piece of junk. Do you have a V8 or a I6?

Is it a toploader 3-speed? If so, then it'll work behind the V8.

I did this back in the 70's on a fairlane.
here's what I remember doing:
fabricate an adapter plate (measured the difference in the input shaft length and made the adapter plate that thick), change the input bearing, added a clutch disc out of a Pinto (can't remember why though), I don't remember doing anything with the drive shaft. I had to cut and weld the shift lever due to the bench seat.
It was a lot of work, and I really lucked out on getting the adapter plate centered correctly (I eyeballed it and welded it to the transmisson ).

If you just need a transmission for you car, I've got a stock 3 speed in good shape you can have for free (it's going to get thrown away pretty darned soon as I'm tired of stepping over it in the garage). I live in Tracy, so you're only about an hour away. Doesn't get you any extra heft, but would save you a boatload of work and money.

Yeah, my V8 three speed is not a toploader. The toploader is a 4 speed.
The toploader 3 speeds were used during the 1930's and 40's.
