4SPD OR 3SPD
You have a stock 4-speed with your 6-banger? You won't want to lose a gear, you will lose acceleration with fewer gears.

Well yeah vin says it came with a 3 but the guy before me installed an orginal 4 spd thank you though ive heard mix reviews on the 4 spd.

If possible, I think you will be much happer with the 4spd. I had a 71 Bronco with a 302 and 3 spd and remember thinking "I would rather have a 4 spd or automatic over this 3 spd". Granted it was 3 on the tree, which is a pain in the butt in its self.
Also agree with the other comments made.
If you're talking about the 3-speed toploader, you're sorely mistaken. It has the same basic design as the toploader 4-speed...minus the 3rd gear ratio.
With any manual, stick with the toploader designs. The sideloaders aren't worth their weight in scrap iron...unless you're going for originality.

The 3 speed is a weak piece of junk and the 4 speed is a rare opition. I wouldn't even consider it

I ended up giving it away to someone who was just trying to get their car back up and on the road as inexpensively as possible. So at least I feel better for doing a good deed...or did I? [&:]
Which backs up Colorado_Mustang's claim. They aren't even worth their weight in scrap. Unless you try to find a part, or have to buy one. Then some greedy bastage is going to charge you an arm and a leg (probably your clutch leg).
With about 80-90HP to the rear tires (and a top end power curve that falls on it's face past 5,000 rpm), the more gears you have, the better off you are.
Not all 4 speeds were top loaders. Even if it's not a top loader, you won't have any issues behind a 6 cylinder. Just keep your shifter adjusted correctly.
Its not a toploader, i was looking into that but the bell housing and other parts wouldnt line up, its the stock 4spd sideloader from another 6 banger that they put in mine but some guy said a the stock 3 was better made, but i agree with most of you saying i wouldnt want to lose a gear which was what i was thinking thank you.
