Default 69 351w rocker torque

Hey Guys, I finally got my 69 going and there was a ticking coming from the valves. I asked around and some people said with a rebuild you might get some noise. So I ran it for a bit and the ticking turned into a Knock!!. So I pulled the valve covers off and noticed that on #8 cylinder, the nuts that hold the rocker in place were loose. Now I went to tightened them down and noticed the more I tightened the spring compressed.

So I was wondering if anyone knew the proper torque for these nuts?

thanks

You still have the stock rocker studs? I so, they can be pulling out of the head. Generally, 20lb-ft is all that you'd need for stock. If the studs are pulling out (which they tend to do), you'll never keep 'em tight.

I know this is an old thread but just in case anyone see's this:

STOP

You CANNOT simply torque rocker arms down randomly. The valves have to be in a specific position to get proper preload. This is done using the EOIC method. Look it up. Youtube has some great videos about it.

For the most part you are correct..For the original poster I believe that engine had the positive stop studs that are only threaded down so far..In that case you could simply torque them down...
