Which flywheel
Hi, first post.
I just pulled my '65 2+2 out of storage after 6 years (also just sold the '65 GT coupe [
] ). Anyway, when I put it into storage, it had a few broken teeth off of the flywheel (my dad put a high torque starter in crooked). So, I need a new flywheel but don't know which one to get.
The engine is a swapped in 351W that I had built for an '85 Mustang and then pulled it out for the '65 a year later. Is there any way to tell by inspection whether I need the 28 oz. or 50 oz. flywheel? The engine is running the serpentine setup from my '85. I'm pretty sure they used a '71 block for the buildup but I don't know about the balance. Is it possible that it needs the 50 oz. balance because it is a serpentine setup or does that have no bearing on things. I'm not sure what to do, I really don't want to have to guess.
Also, does anybody have a recommendation for a flywheel. The engine is pretty healthy (aluminum heads, high lift "cleveland grind" cam with girdles on the rocker arms, etc.). I think it dyno'd about 390 ft-lbs. at the rear wheels (can't remember the rest of the specs) and I don't want to have a problem with it.
TIA!

I would assume it to have the 28 oz. setup, but I guess I'm wondering if it is possible that I have a 50 oz. dampener (I do have the serpentine setup from an '85) or if that is not even possible. My dad actually had the engine built so I'm not entirely sure of all the components. I took a quick feel in there this morning and the crank pulley seemed to be secured by a single large center bolt and my other '65 had three or four bolts depending on the engine.
If I have to guess, I'll get the 28 oz. and cross my fingers, but I'd obviously rather not do that.
Thanks!

The switch to 50oz. was in the 80 model year. My '81 had a 50oz.
Look at the front balancer and compare it to both a 50oz. and 28oz. damper. It's been a while since I've compared 'em, but the 50oz. has a more noticable counterweight.

The 50 oz. didn't come out until something like '86. So, if it is a '71 351W it will have the 28 oz. imbalance system.

Thanks for the responses. I guess the question is if even though the block is a '71, is it physically possible that a 50oz. dampener and flywheel could've been used? I may have to just pull the flywheel and dampener and get somebody to look at it. Thanks
