If you use the original top loader bell housing you can use the Z-bar. You will need an adapter to go between the transmission and the bell housing.
I'm not a huge fan of cable clutches. Some people have great success. I find they stretch when using aftermarket high performance pressure plates.
As an option to the cable clutch you can also do a hydraulic version. JMC makes a kit, or if you are good at fabrication, you can buy the components and make the brackets for a little less than 1/2 the cost. Here is a web page from a guy who did this for his '68

I'm very happy with the 5 speed in my '66.
Good luck on the install,

you talked about the spacer between the trans and bellhousing??? where can i find this or how thick does it need to be???? would like to use original stuff on car as much as possible but with better drivability. im not sure if the 4 spd is for sale either i would think not but ill ask. top loader isnt for sure but the one he pulled out was a side shift ... dont know if that makes a difference on bellhousings ?? to use rod clutch. that page on the hyd clutch is pretty good .. thanks for all of the help...
