Default engine balancing (external)

When getting an external balancer 28 or 50 oz do you take into account the year of the engine or the year of the mustang??

the year of the engine, absolutely! the actual car is in material, that doesn't matter. i can't remember if the difference in weight is for a 289 as opposed to a 302, or if it varies by engine year. but i'm almost 90% sure it varies by engine year. my 1980 302 used the 50oz. just google search and i'm sure you'll find your answer.

Yeah I googled it, but when I was looking at CHPs tech/faq page I got a little confused. For one they don't say what year the short blocks are, I guess when I order one I can tell them to throw the correct balancer in my order

The balance of the flywheel/flexplate much match that of the harmonic balancer. Typically, these things do follow the year of the engine. However, all bets are off with custom setups. I have a 50 oz. balancer and flywheel for my early model Mustang.

So do you think this is the best course of action. Build the danged thing, write down everything I used and get some tech support after. Is there some kind of formula or something that says if you use this year block this kind of flywheel or flexplate, this kind of tranny this kind of etc. etc. etc. get this kind of balancer??

What are you trying to build and what parts do you already have? If you're building an early engine and are sticking with the v-belts, make it easy on yourself and stick with the early balance so that everything still lines up properly. If you're building a 5.0L then stick with the late model balance. As long as you match the early balance dampener with the early model flywhee/flexplate or late model with late model, you'll be fine with respect to balance.
