1967 Fastback mustangs
I have a 68 Fastback a 75 II and a 96 GT and i had a 67 coupe in High School. I sold my coupe and dreeded it since. No matter what year, if you got it, keep it; cause youll miss it when its gone.
Finding the right car is a long process in most cases. Patience is the key to finding the right car and not just settling. When spending so much money it is not wise to just settle. If you want a fastback keep looking. The deals are still out there even though they are fewer and farer between. Look for someone who is getting divorced or needs to sell the car because of financial reasons. This is where you get the deals; when someone has to sell. While you might find a car close to you I would plan on traveling a little if you are looking for a particular car.
If you just want a Mustang then getting a coupe is the most economical way to go. Fastbacks and verts are more money because they are more collectible. If you want a V-8 fastback plan on spending $15000 + for a nice daily driver or a car with an older restoration (#3+ car). As far as engines go, with your budget, you are looking at a straight six or a 289. Big block 67 fastbacks are becoming large dollars and harder to find. Just be patient...more cars will be for sale in the spring, this is the slow time ofyear. Good luck!

I dont think the only reason people like the 67s are because of that movie...they have distinctive features that appeal to people.Actually all the fastbacks in general have an agressive look (not saying the coupes dont) and I think thats why people really like them.
LOL at your sig mustangdemon
i think the fastbacks look like a cruise around businessman car. the coupes just look badass with their hard cut lines. my dream is a 65 coupe that goes to the chop shop with a big friggin motor!

Are you looking outside locally...even out of state? California is at the top end of the cost range on these old cars.
67-68s are still riding the wave of popularity and won't come down anytime soon, so you may have to consider others...or just bide your time.
As for the price peaking and then coming down on these cars.... well, have any gone down in the last 20 years? Not that I know of.

guys thanks a lot for everything. I actually just bought the mustang a couple of weeks ago. Found a classic coupe with everything completely done-interior, engine, paint, everthing. I just took out my rims and put on Winston Winner G/Ts and added an exhaust system. Thanks a lot guys
