Ahhh , I was at indy in 1969 in Roger Penske pit and seen the motor. I was in a motor home with friends and a bbq pit. Most of the indy cars that have exhaust comming out the top are Ford cammers. 427 or 289 or even 260.
Just as I was at the Coumbus Georgia Drag stip in 1967 when Connie Koletta in his SOHC 427 ford dragster put Don Gartlets on the trailer. I ordered a 69 428 mach1 in 1968. I grew up with Jack Roush, actually I hung with his brother jerry. They lived in Rock falls and I lived in sterling Illinois, a river apart. . I was at the track when Don Nicelson ran his flat top merc, I seen Bob Gliden win all ten Pro stock championshps. and when Roger Penske opened his new track in Michigan I was sitting next to the tower when Bill Elliott won.
Web sit? ahhhhhh. don't have one.

That’s correct , DOHC is different than SOHC
The DOHC was called the cammer before the SOHC was called a cammer. But they were both called cammers. The DOHC was Gear driven and the SOHC Had a 6 foot timing chain.

Don Gartlets is a 5foot 7 ash hole. Big daddy my ash. He did a lot for drag racing but what -------. He's in the same class as Warren Johnson , jerk.
I guess that’s really not fair to Don. He was a jerk to me, that’s accurate

I'm not going to go look for it, Tell you the truth, I never even thought about it not being a FE, But I guess it could be something other than a FE. Back then the only Engines that were 427 was the FE so I assumed the DOHC 427 was some off bread version like the SOHC, But it may not have been a FE but a total redesign, racing engine only.
Heck they may have only made one or two of these engines. The 4 cam indy engine was like you said a 255 cu in, But the first 4 cam engine, or one of the first was a 427 DOHC.
In 67 or so The GT40 were racing Lemans with the DOHC engine and I know Dan Gurnny and AJ Floyt had one with a 427, But I don't think that was a DOHC.
Now I really don't know,
While looking for a timeing chain set I did come across this.
"Ford FE 390 428 Comp Hi-Energy timing set new #3208
Fits all FE Ford 1964-74 (excluding DOHC 427 special engine)
And lastly the picture is of a 4 cam indy motor but I would guess the the 427 version was the same and the difference would be sleves and Crank, not external.
