Default small vs large distributor cap

The distributor on my 71 coupe has a pertronix ignitor II in it with an adapter for a larger distributor cap. I'm wonderingwhat the benefits are of a larger dist cap? I'm running into a clearance problem and am wondering if I shouldn't just go back to a smaller, stock style cap. Would I run into overheating of the Ignitor module with a smaller cap? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Caddyman

That cap is designed for the Ford Duraspark II ignition system. It's purpose was to reduce the chance of cross fire due to the higher output and wider plug gaps it used. There is no reason you should have to use it with a Pertronix. You'll have to get new wires as the small caprequires male connectors and the wide cap uses female connectors. I had a Duraspark II system on my 390 and swithced to the small cap to keep it more period correct. No problems.
