Torque Converter
Hi i have a question about Torque Converters.
My car never starts on first gear when i press the gas, i always have to put 1st gear manually to get some power at the start. Also when i get on the Highway i can even go past 60 cuz the RMP is so high
A friend of mine told me it was the Torque converter, but i have alot of questions about torque converters.
First of all what kind should i get, i have a mild modified289 engine, ( 600 cc, mild cam , aluminum intake, electronic distribuitror).
I saw at summit racing they have a lot of different RMP's what does that mean.
aslo if i want to replace mine, how do i do that do i need to take the tranny down?
Hope some one can help.
Thanks

sounds to me like the tranny filter is clogged, or maybe the vacuum modulator is bad. (or the vacuum like going to it is leaking/disconnected)
you can buy a trans filter for about 15 bucks, it comes with a new pan gasket and is pretty easy to do - just a little messy.
i'd check the modulator too, its a little canister sticking out the back of the trans with a small hose or line coming off it. if you have to replace, its only 10 bucks or so but make sure you get the right one. they are identified by the stripe painted on it. memory tell me green stripe but i may be wrong. also, when/if you pull the modulator out, theres a small rod that will fall out so be carefull not too loose it - its about the diameter of a clothes hanger and about an inch long. keep in mind when the modulator comes out tranny fluid will come out too, just a heads up on that.
lastly, if your trans is acting funky and its cause of the filter - well that means you've got significant wear on parts inside (to build up enough crap to clog a filter) so i wouldnt recommend getting a high stall and beating on the tranny harder. if you do end up with a high stall with your mods you only need something a few hundred RPM over stock. like a TCI "Saturday Night Special" or something similar.
Hope this helps!

Could it be time for a new Transmission?
if so what do you guys recommend?
what is the difference between a C-4 and C-6 ? and also i would really like something with overdrive, after i change the rear end to 3.55 gears the RPMS went really high on the highway.

yup aod for overdrive..... im sure there are write-ups and how-to's on these forums somewhere.
a c4 and c6 are both non-overdrive, the c6 is stronger but also robs more HP. for your build a c4 would be fine. if you get your trans rebuild have them put in a shift kit, and go ahead and grab a tad higher than stock converter
