Default first time driving it

I got a 1970 mustang fastback with a 302 anda c4 tranny and i just got it licensed yesterday after work. So i drive it today and the only question that i have is what to do at startup. Its around 65 degrees around here and my car still has to warm up before running right. At first when i turn it on i cannot put it in gear or the car will die. Then after about 60 secs I can put it in gear but it doent run smooth until the car is comppletely warm. I have a manual choke and when i try to use it it kills the car.

Any suggestions?

Just pull the choke out about half way.
