Default Sticky throttle

I've noticed that my throttle on the carb doesn't return all the way back to low when I take my foot of the gas. I even disconnected the pedal linkage from the throttle and it still sticks. I don't think it sticks when the engine is not running though. Is that simply the coiled tension spring on throttle lever shaft not being strong enough or is there some sort of vacuum keeping the throttle from returning back to low?

You need a return spring other than the coiled one on the carb, it is really not strong enough to do the job alone, even when new.

Hi all,

I had the exact same problem with mine.
Only happened sometimes. and it was a sticky problem.
If you touched the gas pedal quickly it might return fully then.
Annoyed the **** out of me.

So what I did was to reposition the spring on my autolite2100 carb.
Did the trick and still does it very well. Works fine. just doesn't look too good.
So either do it that way or get a stronger coil spring.

I once posted a picture of it. I'll post the link once I found it

And yes: I greased the hell out of the linkage and the throttle itself on the carb moves very easy. So it just is a too weak spring for me.

here's the picture:

the other side of coil spring is attached to a screw that holds the valve cover (opened screw, put coil spring aroud it an put screw back in)

You shouldn't have to do what Paddy did. Here is my engine and how the spring is supposed to be attached. It is the only spring for the accelerator and mine works great. I have circled the joint where you may be having the binding problem. I used a piece of rubber hose to fill in the gap that was there from wear over the years. Get that joint freed up and you will have a trouble free throttle.

I still have that rearward-facing long spring attached on the bottom of the carb throttle lever and the back of the manifold, in fact I even replaced that with a new stronger spring (or what I thought was stronger, maybe not) and it still sticks. My throttle setup seems to be a little different than your setups. I even disconnected the pedal linkage completely at the carb throttle arm and it still sticks a little. Oh, one possible reason I can see is that maybe I have the threaded throttle linkage too far forward on the nut that is on the end of the vertical pedal linkage. Right now, it is threaded all the way forward to the end of the threads.

the area where Soaring describes looks dodgy for me as well.
But I checked on the spring as well (pulled it) to see how hard I have to pull to get it closed.
I wasn't too unhappy with the spring itself. I was unhappy with the angle it was pulling. A bit higher up would do a much better job here.
I'll go and see if what Soaring says makes sense on my setup.

But for now (to not crash because of elevated idle):
I have the same setup as you. I attached a picture on what i did ....
I'm an even worse artist .... (the end of the spring that is not connected to carb goes to one of the screws in the valve cover).
I can take proper pictures, but that won't be before tomorrow same time
