Yea, it gets real tough when a "neighborhood association" gets a little power, most of these folks are less concerned with the neighborhood than they are about letting everyone know just how "powerfull" they are, so you have to deal with a bunch of little napoleons and hitlers.

Some friends brought their motor home to my house this summer while they were on vacation, and we parked it on the front driveway. They stayed a few days then left. I got a letter from the homeowner's association that doing that was illegal. I wrote across the front of the letter saying "when you start paying my taxes, then you can tell me what to park on my own property" and sent it back to them. I never heard another word from them. A-holes.......

Sucks to hear that Rmodel65 but what I don't agree with is that if you're going to move into a neighborhood, you better read up on what moving there means. You are obviously aware that you live in a 'historical' area. Just like I who live in an HOA community. There are bylaws and rules you agree to follow when you buy or rent a house there. End of story. If it's such a sore spot find a way to fight it but don't expect to whine out of it.
I don't understand why peeps bitch about stuff they knew they were getting themselves into when they finally get called on it. Your best bet is to check out your area and see what other of your neighbors aren't following the rules and let the Courts know that if they are going to subject you to the codes then they need to enforce it for EVERYONE not just you.
HOA has a rule in our bylaws that no owner shall widen or adversly alter their front landscaping without first receiving approval from the HOA board. We had our driveway widened by two feet on both sides and ripped out some crap trees the builder put in and replaced them with trees that were identical to those in the community parks thinking it would be fine.
I got a letter about two months later stating both were against CCR(HOA) rules blah blah blah. So, I found 6 houses that didn't even use concrete to widen their driveways (rather some god ugly non-matching colored crap) tooks pics, then took pics of our parks sent it to them with a nice letter letting them know that they need to rip the trees out of the parks and replace them with the ones specified in CCR rules and those people that had the non-matching concrete need to also tear their driveways up as it doesn't match the colorscheme of the homes. I got a letter of acceptance to keep my changes but to "please remember in the future you must receive approval PRIOR to making changes" end of story.

The flip side to that is when my neighbor at my old house ($700k-$800Kneighborhood)used to park his motorhome and/or trailer for days at a time in front of my place and I had no recourse.[:@] I would've killed to have some code enforcement at the time.

we have similar bull**** for house regulations like external colors and appearance of old houses on specific streets...all of it made up by people who get paid by the likes of me to make my life miserable and have so little real work to do that they just have to make things up for entertainment...

yeah we didn't move here we've had the house since the 60s my grandfather bought it and we inherited it anyone who moves in to a neighborhood and signs there rights away is truly and idiot. according to the city code all owners in the zoned historic district we supposed to have been notified and we've never received a letter just complaints from the code enforcer the only time we really ahve problems is when the city decides to do a tour of homes or when someone is trying to sell a house

From what I gather from Rmodel's posts, the car is in the back yard, practically out of sight. Excuse me, but if a person or people are objecting to this,, in my opinion they are nannzie panzies with nothing better to do than to stick their noses into other peoples bussiness.
This is what happens to most neighborhood associations,,, over time they are overrun by nanzie panzies, intent on showing everyone just how big their P****** are.

So, Stephen. Are you saying that there were no codes in the 60's when your grandfather bought the house? If so, you should have a grandfather clause where the codes don't apply to you. If you don't have a copy of the codes, then you probably are grand fathered. Check with a lawyer. Or, at least get a copy of the codes where it state imphatically that you are not grandfathered. But if it does state you are grandfathered, then you have a case. Somewhere down the line your family should have had a right to vote on the proposed codes before they in fact became law. Did that ever happen?
