Ok crazy. I found a tangled spark plug wire last night before I closed up the engine last night. This morning I took the car out and It had no problems all the way to the gas station (almost a mile.) I filled up the tank with 7 gallons on 91 and now the car has never run this good EVER.(not to mention it has a bran new carb)My question is was it the wire? Or was it the car not having enough gas?Im in sunny California so its not cold, and I just installed a new 800 cold crank batt. This is my first build, so if my questions seem weak im a rookie.

Also I usually put in the cheap 87 because its my whifes car[:@]will 91 make a differenc since its only a 289? It felt like it did....
It was the wire sparking over to another wire. You still had 9 gallons of gas left in the tank so it could not have been low fuel. Even if the fuel was low, remember that backfiring is caused by an ignition problem, not a fuel problem.

I have a Mallory Unilite distributor in my 302, and had the same problem once... tried everything i could think of. It wound up being the darn center of the distributor cap on the inside.Instead of it being a fixed piece that makes contact with the rotory button, its a piece with a spring under it..... The spring would stick and make it lose contact with the rotory button every now and then, making it backfire.I opted for the whole cap, don't know if i could've bought just that once part in the center.Anyway, i had rebuilt the carb and lots of other stuff before i figured out that one!!
