you could try it if its too low of a octane it will spark knock which can be fixed with timing or bottle of octane booster

How can I find my compression?
Basically, you pull all the spark plugs and use a compression gauge to check. Here is a how-to tech article.

I ran 100Low Lead avitaion gas in my old 289 once. It didn't like it very much.
really? my 302 LOVED the av gas, hell it liked it better than the sonoco 110 or 117 i'd feed to it.

eholzer all you gotta watch for when going to a lower octane is if your motor starts rasping and pinging. if that happens, drive easy to the next gas station and top that thing off with premium

A 9:3.1 comp ratio 289 will run just fine on 87 octane. The 10:1.1 needs the 91-93 and the 11:0 needs upwards of 93 octane. It would take a lot of upgrades to get a 289 to 11.

the 9;3.1 I agree, but do you think it would run"Better" on higher octane?

It may even run worse. It might seem odd that fuels with higher octane ratings explode less easily, yet are popularly thought of as more powerful. The misunderstanding is caused by confusing the ability of the fuel to resist compression detonation as opposed to the ability of the fuel to burn (combustion).

A lot of guys waste money on fuel thinking that high octane fuel is better for their engines. Knocking or pinging is generally caused by the timing not being set right, not the octane of the fuel. Although the octane of the fuel does lead to pinging in the higer compression engines.

Yeah, but that was with a stock 289. I think the higher compression on my 408 would possibly burn it a little better.
