Do you have a closed system? A coolant recovery tank? It is designed to accept the overflow, then when the motor cools down..the coolant gets sucked back into the radiator.
+1 on the overflow tank, it was 100 in Phoenix today!

With the heat you have there, you will probably boil over some whenever you turn off your car. The electric fan(s) will probably help, but you do need an overflow setup to keep the coolant off the ground, and the air out of your radiator.

i know all i have is the stock 2row so i think i am gunna get one after i get a refreshed tranny in cause the way that third gear is slippin its gotta be causeing way more heat
yep a 2 row aint going to make it in the "Valley of the Sun" in the summertime. With a two row you are probably right on the edge of overheating all of the time when it is as hot as it was today and hotter.

It is going to get much hotter!![sm=badbadbad.gif]

overflow is cheap insurance on not overheating. you might try pressure testing the system if theres any air bubbles stuck it will remove them

Yeah, you can get an overflow tank at a junk yard for a few dollars, or just use a liter coke bottle for testing. I **** you not. The coke bottle will work just as good as any high dollar overflow tank. Then if you find that solves the problem, you can get a real overflow tank. The rubber hose is a 1/2" OD hose. Get a 13 pound cap designed to be used on an overflow system.
It sounds to me though, that you are running a lot hotter than your gauge is telling you, so you will most likely need a bigger radiator. Just save your lunch money and don't go out on a date for a few months and you will have it.

so when i drive my car its fine it runs about 1/4-1/3 of the way on my temp guage when i am driving but everytime i kill the motor it boils over but never while its running can someone help me with this
Are you by chance filling the radiator completely full? If you are there is no room for expansion which is what is happening during the heat soak after shut down. Without a recovery tank you need to leave about 3/4-1" of air space at the top of the radiator. My old 1980 240-d M-B had a mark on the inside of the radiator to guage the correct amount of space to leave.

ya actually it runs great when its about a quart low on coolant but i always refill with 50/50 and i leave it about 2in space and then plus i have bumped it up to a 17lb cap it still seems to run hot just not as hot as b4 but i think i will get a summit ovrflow tank not bad for $20 cause its a 1.5 quart but i also found out i can get not only a 3 rw rad i can use the big block rad which is larger significanly larger for $50 more
