i dont know how much the heads would cost from a junkyard BUT you can get a set of assembled world roush heads brand new from summit, assembled with 2.02 intake and i belive 1.60 exhaust for under 1k and you wont have to go rip appart an explorer for them and they are better then the gt40s..

and you wont have to worrie about the heads being cracked or warped like you would from a junk yard..

gt 40 heads are great but they don't just bolt on fyi they have 64cc chambers on them vs the 54cc on your 289/302 so that will really hurt the power of your car cunless you mil them down but wouldn't that change rocker arm geometry so you would have to get diff pushrods am i right
STOCK 289 heads were 64 cc...hi-po were 54.

The combustion chamber of 289 heads were 54.5 CC from 63 to 67. In 1968, the volumn was 63 CC for C8OE-6090-D, L and M heads. High performance heads were 54.5 CC for 64to 67 heads, except for 63 where the volumn was 49.2 CC. For 302 heads, the story is as complicated.

So if I were to get the World Products heads would I get the Windsor Sr (64cc chamber) or the Windsor Jr (58cc chamber)??

Check to make sure that is for both heads, Most aftermarket aluminum heads sell for right at 2K for the pair.

are they assembled?

you'd want the jr's - the bigger ones would be overkill for your motor

They come complete, stainless valves etc... good budget head for the $$$
And you dont have to worry about pushrod length if you switched to pedestal mount rockers..

The HP lost from the half point of compression would be more than made up for by the better airflow.
You'd only drop to about 9.5-1 compression, which is probably better with lower octane gas.
