Surface rust removal
ORIGINAL: JMD
Yea, you need media blasting. You should take the car apart totally for best results. (glass, interior, seals, gaskets, weatherstriping, latches, handles, drivetrain, engine, etc.) This will allow the blaster to get into all of the tight areas, and under gaskets, etc.
Hire an experienced blaster, as much damage (warpage) can be done to body panels due to "spot overheating" if the blaster lingers in one spot too long. All I have ever used is silica sand, but that is all but illegal to use now, I have heard good things about baking soda, it leaves a surface that is not so prone to rust, and is very easy on the steel.

If you have to sandblast often, I feel for you, I sandblasted my 39 Ford Cp many years ago, used mucho sand, it was a dirty, nasty, and utterly distastfull job, especially the inside of the body, where you can't get away from the sand recoiling back at you. I can believe that many people decide to skip the inside of the roof and just say F_ It!!
Myexperience was probably made worse because it was summertime and hot!!
We just had ours done. We stripped it completely first. Cost $800 bucks for the media blasting. Then we had them use self etching primer right after and it was $400. However if you have thick rust, media or soda blasting will have a hard time doing that. See if your blaster can do both. Media on the body panels, something meaner on the rest. Also, if they are gonna prime, get pictures of the entire car right before. This way you will have a real picture of any damage, etc. that the primer may cover up.
thanks guys...from what i read most of you recommend that i take it to a pro. I was thinking about doing it myself in the garage...is this not a good idea? Also there are areas that will need to be repaired (areas will have to be cut out and patches welded) will this cause any problems in the media blasting process? A little more detail for you guys.... the front clip is completely off (including firewall)and i just finished removing the cowl. I figure i need to blast it now before i start welding any pieces to it, that way im not wasting time welding onto rusted metal. I will try and get some pics. I know i took a bad approach at first but im trying to bring it back around. Thanks for the advise guys.
