Itboils down to this: If you are changing your oil every 3000 miles, dino is good. If you are changing your oil every 3000 miles, synthetic is good. I personally use synthetic in my '06's and dino 10w40 in my 67. Just forget the LOOOONG intervals on oil changes and you will be OK no matter what you choose.....except penzoil, gawd!

why the pennz hate?

89 ford work van 365,000 miles on motor 1 (blew head gasket due to radiator hose) - 200,000 on motor 2 (still running) using 10w40 pennz
93 isuzu box truck 6 cyl diesel - isuzu said 300-350k expected out of motor, @ 750,000 it decided to throw a rod thru the block. ran great till the day it blew up.
every other vehicle we have in the family, never had a failure.

It sounds as if you haven't done enough reading about synthetic oils. Get on an Amsoil site, Royal Purple site, Redline site or just google synthetic oil and do yourself a favor by getting educated. Here, I'll get you started. http://www.firstfives.org/faq/oil/oilartcl.html

True Soaring, but like I said...it comes down to frequency of oil changes, NOT oil used.

Synthetic oils were developed for the f-14/f15 by Mobil Oil. Even the guy who started Amsoil said he got the idea from the oil used in fighter jets. I change my oil every 6 months...1st week of April....1st weed of October. Put 350,00 on the 240-d, 200,000+ on the Fiesta. No problems. Is synthetic better? In EXTREME conditons...yes....in everyday NORMAL high performance applications? Not worth the extra money. And without some very trick-run-off-the-oil-pressure port secondary oil system to filter down to like 2 microns, the synthetic isn't any better.
My company 4.3 Chevy in a 2500 van has 151,000 and the only reason the engine was r/r was due to an overheating problem. We use the cheapest 5/30 name brand oil you can buy and change it every 6000.
Spend your money how you want. I'll run 20-50 GTX in my 65.

I was hopeing that this thread would help me to make an educated choice for myself. I am currently running syntec. I visitedmy engine guy this past week because I have a little tapping noise going on. He said not to worry that I just needed a adjustment. Anyway he asked me what oil I was running and he blasted me for using synthetic. He said thatregular oil is better for old engines due to the seals that were used. He said the rear seals are a two piece design and just rely on a rubber sealthen he showed me a newer style seal that had a coiled up spring in it that seals tighter.
Like Soaring I also have done a lot of reading on synthetic and the piece of mind you get from all the added protection and benefits is well worth the cost of the oil. I am personally leaning toward synthetic I just hope it's the right choice.

It will be the right choice. There is absolutely no question that synthetic oil lubricates engine parts better than dino oil. If maximum engine protection is what you are looking for, then change your oil to synthetic with a decent filter such as the WIX. Run the synthetic for 5K, then change the filter and run it for another 5K. Change thefilter then run it for another 5K. Change the oil and run it for another 5K. I'm not sure what is not understood about this process. Obviously you are going to have to add a quart between all these changes.
Hello, and welcome to the 21st century. Even you guys who are still running dino oil don't have to change every 3K miles. That ploy was invented years ago by the oil companies to sell more oil. You can easily run a dino oil for 5-6K miles without having to change.
