You might see if there is a Summer Adult Education course in welding offered in your area. A bunch of us went and wound up building dune buggies.

Good call on the quality auto-darkening helmet. I have two different ones, a Speedglas and a Harbor Freight one. I've had the Speedglas for quite awhile and recently bought the Harbor Freight one on sale ($50 w/coupon) so I could toss it in my Jeep for use with my Readywelder (www.readywelder.com). The HF works okay, but its sensor is kind of annoying. Unlike the Speedglas which is flawless, the sun or a bright light can sometimes trigger the HF helmet if you look from dark towards the light really quickly.

Make sure to get a gas bottle for cleaner, easier welding.
