If no other alterations are made downstream of the stock fuse block, then there is no problem. You can run a 200 amp alternator. Just keep in mind not to hook into the stock fuse block as James has said, itsfed by a 6 ga and is probablyonlygoing to stand about 40 or 50 amps given the fact that the copper is40 years old and has probably lost some of its conductivevalue.

"Given the fact that the copper is 40 years old and has probably lost some of its conductive value." "You can't hook into the stock fuse block? " Is it any wonder why I question the knowledge/motivation of you restomod guys?

"You can't hook into the stock fuse block?"

You can't do that even on a new car. All these aftermarket google-phonic stereo systems are running power off a distribution block and not off the base vehicle wiring harness.

So you think a brand new stock style wiring harness isn't going to hold up to a 100 amp alternator? If I wanted to upgrade my wiring harness I'd have to use one of those painless ones right?? I've heard too many horror stories about those and I'd rather not spend my money on one just because I upgraded my alternator. Anyone running a 100+ amp alternator on a stock wiring harness??? Having any troubles with it?

JMD which one did you buy???
I bought the Sumitt alternator in the link on my above post. But, I am using a Ron Francis wiring kit.

I am with Glen on a 100 amp alt with a stock harness though, a hundred amps going through the stock amp gauge and it's associated wiring, is asking for trouble.

But, if you did not try to go through the stock harness, and only run the single wire directly between the alternator and the battery, and only through this circuit, you would be ok, but IMO 100 amps is more than you would ever need with stock wiring and stock demands on your electrical system, but for a one wire setup, you are pretty much stuck with the 100 amp alt.

I am a huge fan of the internally regulated alts, because there is no guesswork when they go south, if it's not charging, replace the alternator! I have retained the option to wire the car to accept later model internally regulated Ford alternators as well, just in case I find myself disapointed with the one wire setup.

i take most of the older guys on here never hooked up a amp before you run a power wire from the battery with a inline fuse. your fuse box wouldnt have enough power to feed a big amp. i run a 100 amp alt on my truck for the off road lights that i dont use much and it hasnt hurt anything yet.theres nothing wrong with a painless wiring harness. its just a big job since you have to put conectors on every wire and they use thicker wires then a oem replacement harness and its labled for dumb people like me.

Alright - 2 questions for you guys:

1) What about us I-6 guys That Jegs alternator only mounts up to a 289+ haha
2) So what would you recommend, (if not a 100A) as a good replacement? Like a 65?

Nope, never 'hooked up' an amp to a car. I 'hooked up' a couple of 10KW satellite antenna transmitters, 'hooked up' several mega-watt radars (that's one million watts each), 'hooked up' many 1KW SSB tranceivers too, but the closest to the audio range that I ever 'hooked up' was a 12KW sonar to a pair of 5,400 volt motor generators. Nope, got no experience with a simple capacitor bank in a car for a 'boom-box'. I guess all you young guys got all the experience for the simple stuff.
