Default GM style alternators

So my alternator decided to crap out on me yesterday while I was crusing down Broadway. Luckily I was able to coast into a left turn lane and get out and push her across the intersection. I ran to Checker quick and got a stock 61 amp (I thought stock was 55amp?) alternator to get me home. I want to upgrade to a 100amp or larger 1 wire alt now. I should have a long time ago since I've been running a decent sized stereo setup for over a year now. I remember hearing our cars can use the GM style alts. Is this true? What would I have to do to make it work on my 289? Like this one I found on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...248&rd=1,1
That's in my price range. I also found this one which is also in my price range, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...021&rd=1,1

I've heard about the Powermaster and PA-Performance kits for the 3G styles from late model Tauras's and Stangs, but those are spendy. I've also searched a few forums about alternators. I'm just trying to find the best bang for the buck. Thanks!

Or, you can get one ready-made for Ford.

Why would anyone who is running basically stock parts need a one wire 100 amp alternator? I could see it if you have a huge amp for a stereo and an electric fan. If you do decide to put in all that high amperage drawing equipment, you are foolish if you don't upgrade the wiring harness first. You will look pretty dumb driving down the highway with a fire under the hood or dash because you were using a 40 year old wiring harness made to be used with a 55 amp alternator and charging system. If you are going to restomod, then do it the right way.

So you think a brand new stock style wiring harness isn't going to hold up to a 100 amp alternator? If I wanted to upgrade my wiring harness I'd have to use one of those painless ones right?? I've heard too many horror stories about those and I'd rather not spend my money on one just because I upgraded my alternator. Anyone running a 100+ amp alternator on a stock wiring harness??? Having any troubles with it?

JMD which one did you buy???

Nope. I replaced my wiring harness. The under dash stuff is stock, but it only goes to the factory lighting and ignition switch.

Now you are starting to see the debacle of running stock wiring harnesses with high amp drawing add ons that you restomod guys are doing. It's not a matter of whether I like it or not, it's a matter of doing it the right way so that you are safe to add on all your expensive and amp hungry equipment.

I think this issue about problems with a stock wiring and a 100A alternator is being blown out of proportion. Done correctly, the additional power draw needed for Amps, Caps, Monitors, or whatever else is in these new high power stereo systems won't have an affect on the basic car wiring. Typically, a high power alternator feeds a 6, 4, or even 2 gage wire over to some sort of power block. The additional stereo units are bridged for power at that point. The original 8 gage black/yellow wire that feeds the main car power to the fuse box is not carrying any more current than normal. Now, if someone wires the high amperage equipment through the main fusebox...say, picking up the radio lead to drive additional items, then there is a problem.

I know virtually nothing about all the high end stereo equipment in these cars these days...but I am impressed by the younger generations technoid workmanship......
