Rally Pac
Does anybody know if in 1965, Rally Pacs came painted the same color of the interior or were all the housings black? I've seen plenty of RPs that match the interior color but I'm not sure if that was an owner modification or not. FWIW, the used ones on Ebay always seem to be black so that would lead me to believe that they came black. My '65 GT had a Rally Pac, but the interior was black so that doesn't help me much there.
FWIW, I'm going to pick upa repo RP for my '65 fastback with medium blue interior.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
Both black and interior color Rally Pac were factory installed. If the assembly line didn't have the right interior color - it was black. Dealers had the old out of stock fallback, 'we don't have that colorbut I can get it for you in a couple of days'.A few years back, Dallas Mustang was the only source, and I believe that they 'painted to order' to keep their inventory down.

Jim,
How well would it look to spray the exterior housing of the repo RP with the same color-matched interior paint from NPD that I'm painting the rest of the interior with? In other words, would painting over the "camera case" finish with the regular interior paint present any surprises? I'd hate to screw up a brand new part.

Emp,
If you look close enough, you can get them for under $400. Considering what it would cost to purchase and restore a used one, it is not too bad. Besides that, if I don't get one, I won't have a tach or a clock.
Maybe it is because my first Mustang came with one, but to me, the 65/66 steering colum looks like something is missing if there isn't a RP on it.

Jim,
I have an MSD with a tach adaptor so that may throw a wrinkle in the mix. The tach adaptor will allow for use with either a voltage or a current trigger tach. Do you know which one is used with the repo RPs? FWIW, I used my factory RP in my '65 GT with both a Ford Duraspark ignition and an MSD with a tach adaptor.
What do you think about painting the housing of the repo RP with the NPD interior paint? Would I be better of just leaving it black?
Thanks,
Jeff

I could be completely wrong on this, but wasn't itthe GT Rally Pac's that were interior color in '65? The GT package had the low profile RP, which then came standard in '66, due to the different dash layout.I thought the 6K and 8K RP's that came with the standard interior in '65 were all camera case black. On my '65 A code, non GT, the RP has always been black, even though I have a red interior. The two other owners since new (my uncles) have confirmed this. A friend of mine has an authentic '65 GT, and his low pro RP is red, the same color ashis interior.
By the way, the original RP in my car was stolen while one of my uncle's was at college in the late 60's. I searched the net for months last year, and finally came across an original 6K'65 RP that was refurbished. It works like a charm with my Pertronix.

Jeff,
The original Rally Pac tach was wiredinline on the 'hot' side ofthe resistance wire to (and between) the ignition switch. It 'read' each pulse generated by the points thru the coil, more pulses per minute, more voltage. On that basis I would assume it's was of thevoltage type.
As to paint, the factory used what it had for colors, matching the interior type or using a black one (remember - all wrinkle paint). I would paint it your interior color. The 65 and 66 assembly manuals list only three part numbers for both styles, 6 cylinder, V8 - 6,000 rpm and V8 - 8,000, so the painting and color ofa Rally Pac was an assembly line procedure and not an inventory one.
And it was NOT part of the GT package.

Okay, unless I hear otherwise of a different manufacturer or supplier, I'm going to get an Oval Industries setup from Sac Mustang for about $400 with wiring harness, mount shipping and tax. I think I will go ahead and paint it.
Thanks for the info Jim.
