Success. Motor and is on engine stand and tranny is sitting on the floor of my garage. Actually was much easier than I had envisioned.

Now for some clean up and getting the freeze plugs replaced. Something tells me 25 years of grease is going to take some work to get off.

while its out paint the engine bay its alot easyer wrap the wires and hoses with alum foil its easyer then tape. id take the block to a machine shop have it baked and cleaned maybe a little clean up bore and magnflux for cracks.

Oven cleaner and paint strippper save a lot of time cleaning. Just watch what type of materials they warn youto avoid.

Project update,

I had to pull the motor to replace freeze plugs. After getting all of the freeze plugs replaced I discovered that I had a corrosion hole in the timing chain cover water passage. This meant removing and repairing the timing chain cover.

Since I had the bottom of the motor open I figured I would be proactive and replace the rear main seal, (old rope style). Welll, removing the block portion of the rear main seal on a motor that has not been run for 13 years is not easy. I ended up having to remove the crank which if you did not know also means pulling the heads and removing the pistons since the crank cannot come out with the pistons in the block.

Well it turned out that it is a good thing that I had to pull the pistons. Three of the pistons had broken top rings, two had cracked skirts, and one of the head gaskets had a leak between a water passage and cylinder. This motor would not have lasted long.

The block and cylinder bores are in reasonably good shape. I have cleaned things up and honed the cylinders to clean up some of the crud. However, I am stuck without two replacement pistons.

I really do not want to put a new set of pistons and rods in this motor because I am planning to swap to a 351W when I find one to rebuild.

I had a fairly productive weekend. I still have not gotten the motor put back together but I did get some frame work done. The following pictures show the passenger side front frame rail. I had to replace a portion that was rotted out.

I think that things turned out pretty well.
