65 Mustang 289 Severe Engine Knocking
My 65 Mustang has severe engine knocking. I suspect a blown rod, but I'd like to be sure before I pull the motor to get it rebuilt or buy a new one. First thing I've didwas check the engine oil. It has oil, but it looks thick.Does anyone knowwhat else could be causing the loud knocking. Was told one optioncould be oil pump.

"knocking" could be anything depending on what you define knocking as. Could re rod bearing, main bearing, piston slap, detonation etc. Need more description of what it's doing
i think maybe the rings broke on one of the pistons and the piston is slaping around in the cylinder...
take the oil pan off and see if there are chunks of metal.
either wat i suggest you take the oil pan off and inspect the oil.. see where you are from whats is in the oil.

Pull the pan, see whats kicking there. If you can't see anythying untoward there go ahead and pull the engine and do a post mortum on it. I recently had a similar occurance with my NEW 351w. It turns out that the machine shop didn't hone out the #1 cylinder properly and there was a tight spot about halfway down the cylinder bore. One quick trip to the high side of 6500rpm and the piston and cylinder wall were scorched. Rehoning the bore and a new piston and I was back in business so I didn't have to pull the engine.
