Hard Starting When Hot
This has beendiscussed a few times. I did some searches that help me leed to what I think the problem is.
Basically car starts fine when cool. When temp gets over 80 and run the car for awhile then shut offfor a few minutes it is hard to start like it is not getting gas.Although I do see some shooting from injectors. But have to let engine crank a few times to get it started. Once started runs fine. If Istart it right away after shutting off itfires right up. Starter and battery are fine getting planty of crank. So not an issue with hot starter or advanced timing.
My guess is after the car sits the fuel in bowl is evaporating from the heat rising.I was planning on buying a heat sheild that Holley makes and also wrapping fuel lines with some type of insulation. (Hate to cover the stainless braided though).
Car is 302, with performer 289, 1" aluminum riser, and 600 Holley.
Does my theory sound right to you guys and curious what others have done.
thanks

Sounds like a classic case of vapor lock if the engine is more difficult to turn over than when it is cold. Is this the case, or does the engine turn over just fine but takes longer to start?
Starter turns engine over fine just takes longer to start. I've had overheated starters before and it's not that. Not slow sounding at all - sounds normal.
If I pump the gas when its hot and won't start right awayit just causes it to smoke when it finally starts. So it's getting gas from squirters. PO had a thick paper spaceron the car when I got it. When swapping out carb last year I did not replace it. Makes me think he had a similiar problem. Was aproblem last summer just not as bad. I put stockair cleaner base as opposed to 10" I had on it last year- maybe trapping more heat.

That was my guess also - gas was boiling. Tried a little experiment took car for ride got it warmed up pretty good. Shut it off and then turned right back on - fired right up. Let it sit for 10 minutes and when to start - again hard start. Pretty sure that heat is rising and boiling out the gas. Kind of surprised though engine does not run too hot at all - never any problems (knock on wood) with over heating.
What about this Holley heat shield was thinking about getting this - I've got 1" alum spacer on now and it has the vacuum port for the PCV. The 1 inch phenolic spacers I looked at did not have the vacuum port. What do you think? Different approach - same result?
