Engine Install Websites..Tips/Tricks? Help!
So, first off, thanks to everyone that has helped out in the past with questions I have asked on here. You guys have been great.
I pulled my 1965 289 to fix some stuff (leaks, clean it up, etc.), and was going to build it with a cam/heads until funds disappeared (thanks, wife!). So, I just put it all back together and decided to install it the way it was (minus leaks). My only problem is getting the engine back in. I seperated it from the C4, and took it out that way, and boy was it a pain to get the two apart! I can only imagine how hard it will be to get everything lined back up to get it back in!
So, what are the tricks? Are there any good websites out there that have some pictures of the tips and tricks to getting this thing back together?
I was thinking about taking the tranny out, and shoving everything back together as a unit, but I want this done and over with. I also don't want tranny fluid all over my driveway (nor do I want to sleep on the couch for doing so, again, thanks wife!). Taking out the trans seems like a step backwards to go forward. Is it worth it? I will be doing this by myself in my driveway...bummer, huh? All tricks/tips would be very welcome!
Also, anyone in the Anaheim, Ca. area that has an engine lift for sale? I rented one for $30 and it worked great, but I have a feeling that once I get it in I will realize I did something stupid and need to take it out again. If I could just buy a badly worn/used one for $50 or so it would be worth it. Plus, when I get fed up and angry putting it in I can just walk away and not worry about the rental hourly charge.
One more thing. I asked if anyone had a 302 for sale in used/yet-working, condition before. I need something cheap, $300-$400, but something that will just work for now. Anyone happen to have one before I stick this thing back in?
Thanks again folks, everyone here is awesome!

I would just put the engine back in without removing the transmission. What you need is an engine tilter like the one attached to this engine:

It will make things MUCH easier when you're trying to align the engine and transmission.
If you pulled the torque converter with the engine, put it back on the transmission before you go to reinstall.
Just go slow and don't put your fingers under the engine. Don't try to rush because of the rental charge. If you hurt yourself, you'll still have to pay rental on the equipment while you are waiting in the ER.
BTW, I bought my engine hoist 16 years ago with my first tax return. It is by far the best single tool investment I've ever made.
