new here looking for help and knowledge
Hi,
My name is Chad I'm 23 years old and ready to start working onmy 1967 mustang GT, coupe, I found it for sale on the side of the road, after checking it out i decide i had to have. It looks really good (the guy i bought it from did the body work and paint) I've had it about 2 years now only having to replace the battery and master cylinder. I've always been into hot rods and have helped with several builds but now that my car is payed off I'm ready to start on my own ride. I hope to do has much as possible myself (which means i will be doing a lotof hands on learning). Heres the kickerits also mydaily driver. So the first thing i want to tackle is the steering and suspension. I knowi need a new steering box but i need to know if i need a long shaft or short shaft? The car has a 302 (replacing the dead 289 the swap was done b4 a bought it)itsan original a\c car and has power steering. Which brings me to my next question How do i find out what year model my 302 is? The guyi bought the carfrom was unsure and it sure makes buying parts hard when you cant tellthe partsguy a year.
p.s. any help is appreciated and i look forward to making new friends in the mustang world. pics of my car coming soon.

Have you thought about using a rack and pinon swap in lieu of a new gearbox and suspension swap? If not, heres some info from another post that should help:

The long shaft steering box will not have a rag joint between the box and the column, most eary 67's had the long shaft. Mine was built in 7/7/67 and it has the long shaft. The shaft goes straight up to the steering wheel. If you don't go with a rack you might consider a 68 box and column to be safer.
As for the engine, if it has the original intake the part number will begin with a C if it was a 60's model year and a D if it was 70's,E = 80's and so on. The second digit will be a number and that is the year, for example a C8 would be a 68. If the intake has been swapped you could pull a valve cover and check the part number in there.
Hope this helps

For your steering and suspension I would recommend looking into a rack and pinon setup, manual or power, they are easy to instal and have great capability. I would also recomend upgrading to disk all the way around for optimum stopping power especially if it is your daily driver that will make a huge difference.
