Rear end gears
My 3.55s with the old c4 on the highway = lower speeds at rpms I really didn't want to stay at, so 3.73s would be a bit much IMO. I just got the AOD in this weekend and haven't had a chance to highway it and see how much it has improved.
the only thing im trying to figure out is, will this 9inch center section/housing, fit where my old 8inch center section/housing is, i just want to unbolt the one and bolt the other in, one guy said yes i can do it, another said no i cant, i just want to use the axel housing on each side (if thats whats it called)

are 3.25s the stock gears in a 9inch? how are they? because i found a rebuilt 9 inch with the ford oem 3.25 gears in them, id swap them out to 3.55 but it comes with a 1 year warranty
No, a 9" center will not fit in an 8" housing. You need an 8" pumpkin, end of story. You can eitherremove yours and take it in to a local shop to get it rebuilt with new gears (a posi diff would be a good idea at this time), or you can order one and have it sent to your door ready to bolt in.
let explain, im not trying to put and 9inch rear into an 8inch housing, im going to buy a 9 inch housing(pumkin) whatever you call it all rebuilt with gears and all inside, and replaced the ENTIRE CENTER SECTION with the 9 inch pumkin, ive been told it will work. im just double checking will it work
Once again, NO, you CANNOT do this. You're confusing the terms 'housing' and 'carrier.' The housing, aka 'axle' housing,is the entire long welded cast iron piece that retains the axles. The carrieris what retains the differential assembly; this bolts onto the housing. This is also known as the pumpkin, or center section.
A 9" swap requires an entire 9" replacement housing. Under no circumstance will a 9" center section fit into an 8" housing. The two are completely different creatures, aside from the axles (which are the same)and sometimes the bearings.
