An eye opener- please read.
I also have the metal divider, it was pretty easy to install and definetly worth it. I personally don't worry about somebody rear-ending me because I don't drive slow enough for anybody to catch up...jk.
I'm glad some of you are finding out this is an important topic. I plan on doing all I can do come spring time. I will be making a metal devider and checking into a fuel cell as well. Thanks for the kudos evil.

if i get hit hard enough for the tank to rupture that means a few things:
1- I'm already dead
2- ive already broken my face on the steering wheel, and the steering column may be lodged in my chest
3- look at number 1, if this happens id prefer to just have the car blow up.

but seriously, i installed the steel seat divider and just hope that i wont ever have to find out how well it actually works
A Google search on this topic will turn up a TON of information. From what I've read, the problem isn't only that the tank will rupture and douse the interior with fuel... A rear collision can also jam the doors closed.
I've got a hood off an 89 Mustang that I haven't been able to sell... I've been thinking about using a section of it for a trunk firewall. It will make an awesome place to mount some electronics.

Yes, installing a metal divider is a good idea in any old Mustang. (or any other '60's era Ford.)
It can help in a rear end collision and it makes it almost impossible for anyone to escape from the trunk...

I CALL BS ON THIS,
most cars from 60's to early 80's have rear mounted tanks any serious accident could puncture and cause an explosion, if your looking for dangerous cars look into 60's to 70's imports or those old trucks with the gas tank in the cab behind the seat,(try smoking in that!)
if this was really a safty issue it would not pass D.O.T. safty inspections!
besides we all know most mustangs are involved in front end collisions and not rear end ones !

I remember seeing a special about this on TV when I was about 12 years old, and they showed how the car would just go up in flames because of the leaking vapors that could fill the cabin before the gas actually ignites.. Which would suck..
When I was a kid we set my buddys camp on fire by using a crap load of gasoline on a 8 foot tall stack of pine wood, pine needles and pine cones,, it was a little wet so we figured the gas would help with the fire.. We lit the match threw it in and then the ring of fire flew out at least 20 ft from the 4 foot diameter fire pit,, it left scorch marks on every tree that it hit and set lots of pine needles on fire,, Thank GOD that it was wet out or it would have really sucked.. I remember the sound, like a wave of flames,, Woorroosh.....[sm=badbadbad.gif] [sm=badidea.gif]
Sorry,, i got a little off topic..
