so im thinking about a rear end.
im building a 347. i work at an engine shop and we built a 331 a few months ago that dynoed at 427hp. so with my 347, it should push out about 440-450hp. i know there have been numerous threads about what size rear ends, but i dont want to go searching through them for my answer. so, my question is, can i rebuild my 8 inch rear end to withstand my motor? i want a 9 inch but i dont have the money. i dont have a clue about gearing and whatnot, so can someone please explain what the gearing ratio means, like 4:10, 3:73, etc. and can someone please advise me on what would be best for me. i plan on putting a 5 spd manual, and i rarely drive it on the freeway. so should i get a more torque-ier set up? i really dont know at all about gears and stuff so bear with me. thanks very much
I think about rear ends all the time.
About your question, though: You can easily build an 8" to take that kind of power. You'll want to swap the axles and brace the housing to reduce flex. A rebuilt center chunk also helps, just make sure the carrier is one of the stronger pieces (count the ribs...more the better).
The axle may last a while without much for upgrades as long as you drive smooth. The 8" is used is racing quite a bit, usually on the small time dirt tracks and some paved tracks. They are lighter than the 9" and can handle the smooth action of oval racing pretty well.
