underside painting

RE: underside painting
I started with bare metal, epoxy primer, sealer, then the single stage urethane black paint. It was all House of Color brand paints. With three coats of protection it should last long and looks good. Since I live in CO i don't have to worry about salt etc. but then I wouldn't drive it in the winter anyways. I did my engine compartment and will be doing my trunk this week or the next the same way. I really like the reults especially since this is my first restoration I was concerned about choosing the proper coating. There are a bunch of different coating and types of paints to use all which are good. Just choose the one that fits your application and budget to get the look you are looking for.

RE: underside painting
I stripped mine to bare metal and brushed on POR-15 then sprayed it with their self-etching primer. After it dried I started sanding and the POR-15 came off in strips. (POR couldn't tell me why it failed, but I have read on other forums thatthis isn't all that unusual - it's hard as a rock or it comes right off - who knows? POR didrefund my money.) After I got it all back off (7 full days of work), I treated the metal with Ospho then painted it with Nason epoxy primer. After seam sealer onall the joints,Ipainted over that with Nason chasis black paint. I used 3M Body Schutz in the wheel wells and outside of the front aprons. The chasis blacklooks good but has just a little more gloss than I would like.It is easy to spray and should be easy to touch up if necessary.
