Over the last 7 years of being active on Mustang forums, I have read at least 6 posts where the strut rods on their classic sheered well driving the car. In EVERY case the car was a daily driver with poly bushings and the original strut rods. Now with the huge number of these cars on the road and lots of them having poly the risk is probably minimal however for me and my car I would not do it and at the very least if I was dead set on using poly I would invest in new strut rods. If you remove the LCA and spindle and then install a strut rod with rubber bushings and then try and move it the motion is a little stiff but not bad. Do the same thing with poly and the strut rod is much harder to move. The long and the short of it is if you are using 40+ year old parts you really have no clue what kind of life they have had. An accident in the cars past may have put some micro-fractures in the steel of the strut rod and the added force of the poly bushings is all such a fracture may need to work in to a full on crack and subsaquent brake. IMHO poly bushings on the strut rods also reduce handling and ride quality because there is one more piece adding tension and rebound to the normal suspension motion. That is why replacing the bushings completely with a heim type joint (weather as an adjustable strut rod or just as a heim strut rod), makes such a vast improvement in handling.
