If your engine is not a Cobra Jet, Police interceptor, or Boss, the 429/460 engines are pretty much the same with few differences across the years of production. The later engines (after 72)had larger combustion chamber sizes to lower compression.

Aside from the above mentioned exceptions, the blocks, cranks, rods, etc. are virtually the same throughout the life of the 385 series engines.

The casting number for the heads from 1968 - 1972 (except for the above noted exceptions) will be one of the following, they all have the same chamber size, port size, and valve sizes.

2.09" Intake Valve, 1.65 Exhaust Valve, 2.18 x 1.87 intake port size, 1.99 x 1.30 exhaust port size,
88cc chamber

casting numbers:

C8VE-A, C9VE-A, DOVE-C, D3AE-A2A

SCJ and PI casting #s

D0OE-R, D2OE-AA, D2OE-AB, D3AE-FA

If you find that you have a CJ, SCJ, or PI engine , I can post the specs for these as well, right now I am too lazy to do so for no good reason!

<< BTW, a 460 is nothing more than a stroked 429....>>

I got my information from "Ford Engine Parts Interchange", they like the 429/460 in it's stock form. They say that the engine is great, tough, makes good power, and that a CJ, SCJ, or PI engine is a nice bonus, but not something needed forstrong performance.

You might check into some of the aftermarket heads and other partsoffered for this engine as well.
