Default crusing noise

When i get up to freeway speeds i can hear a noise coming from right under the shifter. There is a little play in the shifter when the car is in gear. I believe the old shift linkage is just loose like that. If I move the shifter down I can get the noise to stop. Is this rattle normal or is my linkage too loose? What should I be looking for? This is a 3 speed toploader.

like a little loose washer sound? rattle rattle? I have that same Da$n problem mine gets quieter when I grab the bottom of the stick. I dont have much of idea as to what it is, but perhaps the shifter/stick is loose?

it is a loose something rattling. Mine only gets quiter if I hold pressure on the stick. If I am in 3rd then I can hold downward pressure and it will stop sometimes sometimes it is side to side pressure.
