64 260v head question
Hello Stang Folks...had a 65 in 65 with 289 GT vert..totaled in 70.
New here...
I'm a Corvair guy working on friend's 64.5 260v8 vert
Done the c4, now in the heads
Question:
Use any sealer on head gasket or intake gasket?
Also, this vert has two steel plates on the underbody that may not make it back on...the body nuts are broke loose. Should I tack them with arc welder? It this a vert thing for stiffness?
Thanks,
Russell in B'ham

Welcome RT!
The sealant question will depend strictly on which type of head gaskets and intake gaskets you intend to install.
I have always installed coated Fel-Pro gaskets that do not require sealant for the heads and the manifolds except for the front and rear edges of the intake...
Stock type gaskets, MLS etc.,will require "copper coat" or something similar.
My son has been scanning e-bay lately looking for a Corvair project car....
I like um... to bad they did not catch on with the public at large, those would have helped GM through the 70s and the resulting "small car experience" probably would have helped to this very day.
It looks like there is a fair selection of new parts available for these cars (Corvair Underground etc.), but the selection is skinny when compared with the parts available for Mustangs... we are talking a whole different ball game here...
Good luck with that Mustang, and post away with any questions!
<<Oh yea,,, the brackets, IDK, but someone with a little more convertible knowledge should chime in, if not, ask until it gets answered!!

JMD,
Thanks for the note.
What is "copper coat"?Is it this:

Also, what do you recommend for a sealer on the ends of the intake? Blue Permatex? or what?
The last time I worked on a water pumper, the only stuff around was Permatex #1 and #2!!! Showing my age!
Corvairs are everywhere if you look and CHEAP! You can get a good car for $4K or less. Projects are given away.I have a 65 Corsa vert with the 4x1 barrel setup. Sweet and quick. Runs like a top, but you don't need to think about owning a Corvair if you can't turn a wrench cause NOBODY will work on them!
Thanks again

Russell yes that is the copper coat you need....i use a 1/2" of black silicone on the front and back of the intake and throw the stock gaskets out. i am pretty sure the plates on the 64.5 are for support on the verts(friend has one and thats what he said).
