Default 351c cam at distributer gear

Anyone had this problem? Elgin cam w/ rebuilt dist. Remanufactured motor w/ mild cam, went to start it for first time and it ran for about 1-2 minutes, just long enough to open thermostat after several short starts to get timing close. No spark, checked dist and found it was not turning. After some finagling, it came out, but gear was eaten pretty bad. Think cam is okay (fingers crossed and praying).
Auto parts I bought the dist from thinks maybe wrong metal gear for cam, but I can't find anything to indicate otherwise (i.e.-my fault, they don't want to replace it).
Oil shaft and pump still turn w/o major effort, pushed 70 psi oil pressure when it ran. Don't think I bent anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
Plan to drain pan and flush what I can of metal pieces out.

Is it a roller cam, or do you know if it's a steel core cam? Sounds like a common problem when a roller cam is used with a dizzy gear designed for a flat tappet cam(the gear is iron, a lot softer than steel). Also, is the cam thrust and dizzy gear thrust correct? Is there good oil return from the front of the cylinder head back towards the pan?(that's where the dizzy/cam gear gets it's oiling from)

Also you definately want to change your oil and get all that metal out.

I'd suspect the distributor (not dizzy) vendor. Take it back and demand a replacment. Even if the gear was the wrong type material, the resulting wear and damage would take hundreds of miles of driving to occur. Not 2 minutes.
Cam is no doubt damaged also. You need to pull it and inspect it.
