Default I think I broke something

I was out driving around in the 66 and went for a "spirited drive" and all of a sudden I hear and feel a large bang from the rear end. So I slow down and get out to see what it could be. No fluid on the floor or no parts missing. So I jump back in the car and start to pull away and I hear and feel as if the rear end is going to fall off and if feels likes its bouncing around![:@]The leaf springs and are fine shocks and so on. I feel it may be the gear. What do you all think it may be? And if it is the rear end gear what should I get and where should I get it?

Thanks

Ready to start buying parts and you don't know what is wrong yet?? Lets troubleshoot it first. Get it home and start tearing it down and we will see what it needs.

Jack the car up and check the u joints, and leave it in neutral with the parking brake off(put some blocks around the wheels still on the ground if you don't raise the front) and turn the driveshaft, if the gear go kaboom then when you turn the driveshaft and move the gear, you'll feel it. Make sure you turn the rear axles at least 1 full revolution.

same thing happened to me on the highway, very scary going like 70 and having it happen then totally break. i would be willing to bet that it is the u-joint just like others have said. take a look and see, if it lets loose you will tear apart the underside of the car. i would replace them just to be safe

Funny though...
U-joint usually don't quit all of asudden.
You'll hear that nasty clunk everytime you put it in gear from park when they start going bad, so it's a warning sign.
But you ignore this and drive the car in a spiritual way, lol, it'll just snap on you[8D].

Bad u joints will often create a constant vibration at certain speeds or loads.

One more question. What causes the U-joints to go bad and where should I pick some up at? Any recomendations on what brand to use?
