Default Water pump gaskets

So since we got our new 4 post hoist this last winter I have got to stand under my car for the first time. It's an awesome feeling to be standing underneath my car until I noticed how bad my leaks have become. I thought I fixed my leaky water pump a while ago but aparently not. Seems to be dripping out of the very bottom and no its not the weep hole.

I am going to replace the gaskets hopefully this weekend and am wondering what type of sealant to use with the gaskets. Do I need to use sealant on both gaskets or just the one that's between the block and wp?

I think that it’s called something like Permatex #2 gasket sealer. Just go to your local auto parts store and ask them for some. You can purchase a small little Ketchup sized packet for one application or a big o’ tube for multiple applications.

The hardest part will probably getting your bolts loose (with out striping them). The other thing to make sure is that you remove all remnants of the old gasket. Make sure that the timing cover part that connects to the water pump is clean of all old gasket debris This is important so that old gasket is not present in-between the new gasket there-for creating a weak point in that area of the seal.

To answer your other question. Apply the sealant to the water pump side of the gasket, coat / cover the whole side then put in onto the water pump. Then coat the other side and line up the water pump with the timing cover….so yes…you coat both sides.

Good luck!

K thanks. How about the gasket that is between the plate on the water pump? Does sealant need to be used on that?
