Default thermostat temperature

Since I was having overheating issues, I took the thermostat out. Now the engine doesn't heat up past 162, should I run it like this, or get a lower degree thermostat?

Sounds like overheating was caused by bad T-stat. Install a new one of proper temperature range.

you should run it with a thermostat. just put a 160 in there if you want. maybe your radiator just needs to be flushed. but if you run it with no thermo, then the coolant isnt going to have much time to cool down in the radiator

Your thermostat is there to create enough back pressure (even when open) to force the coolant to the back of the block. Running without one is asking for trouble. Fulsh your system, check your hoses, make sure your radiator is good (not half-full of gunk). 160 is a little cool in my opinion but still acceptable. I would shoot for being able to run with a 180.

180 is what i run. Without a thermostat is not a good idea.

I run a 195, and it's a very hot summer envorionment here. No overheating. The only way a t-stat will cause overheating is if it's bad.

You need to go into the FAQ section and read the post about overheating. Personally, here on the lower west coast, I like a 160 in the summer and 180 in the winter ( if it starts getting too cold). If your radiator has enough thermal effeciency any thermostat will work. unfortunately the mustang does not have a really great radiator to start with so there's room for improvemnts. Please take a look in the FAQ's. I'm sure you'll gain an exception education on the issue.
