Default 1971 429 mustang

Hey Guys,

I've got a little problem I need some help with. I have a 1971 mustang with a 429 four speed. The engine and tranny are fresh and the clutch is new. The problem is when I let out the clutch, from a dead stop, I get a terrible shake that run through the car. I mean it ready shakes, you can see that dash shake back and forth. However, once the car is moving and the clutch is all the way out everything is fine. Even at high RPMs still good. I also get the same shake whe I down shift. It only seems to happen when there is a high load, like getting the car moving or slowing down using the gears. HELPPPPP!!!

Thank for the idea, but no that's no it. I tried many different launches and the shaking got worse the more power I gave it. The least amount of shaking was when I let the clutch out really slowly.

What you are describing sounds like clutchjudder/chatter. Did you resurface your flywheel when you redid your clutch? High spots and/or hot spots can cause this and are cured by resurfacing the flywheel.

Here are some other causes I found online:

. Judder can be the result of any number of problems. Possible causes may be as follows:

[ol][*]Improper break-in procedure.[*]Flywheel was not properly resurfaced before the new clutch was installed.[*]Flywheel is not parallel, or the friction surface is out of parallel with the crank flange surface.[*]Flywheel has severe hard spots or hot spots.[*]Flywheel has an improper step or cup dimension.[*]Damaged or excessively worn CV joints.[*]Bad u-joints in driveshaft or u-joints misaligned.[*]Excessive backlash in differential.[*]Excessive driveline angle.[*]Bad leaf springs, bushings or mounts.[*]Improper gear ratio versus tire diameter.[*]Defective pressure plate and/or disc.[*]Disc has inadequate or no marcel--not enough cushion between friction facings.[*]Oil or grease contamination on clutch facings.[*]Worn or damaged clutch linkage.[*]Bent cover assembly and/or disc.[*]Improprely tuned engine.[*]Worn or damaged engine mounts or transmission mounts. This is a very common problem with Ford replacement clutches. I used to work at a local parts store and we would often get returned clutch kits because of the problem. I would reccommend pulling the transmission out and getting another new clutch kit, and be sure to have the flywheel turned. This should get you all straightened out!

Thanks tyler72 & Pushrodpower,

I didn't know that Ford replacement clutches were such a problem. I have to say that the problem muct be in the clutch area and not else were as the car did not do this before the rebuild. So that would rule out

Damaged or excessively worn CV joints.
Bad u-joints in driveshaft or u-joints misaligned.
Excessive backlash in differential.
Excessive driveline angle.
Bad leaf springs, bushings or mounts.
Improper gear ratio versus tire diameter.

The engine mounts or transmission mounts are new so that rules them out.

I'm not sure what "Disc has inadequate or no marcel--not enough cushion between friction facings." means.

How would I know if I had a severe hard spots or hot spots. I have only driven the car 3 or 4 miles since the rebuild.

I guess I off to the tranny shop and have it all pulled apart :-( Oh well that's better than finding out the engine shop didn't balance the engine right.

Nina

Did you resurface the flywheel when you did the clutch?
