Default harmonic balancer torque

how in the hell do you torque this thing?

a breaker bar got it tight enough to start spinning the engine.

its an auto so i cant put it in gear.

what would be the problem with hitting it with an impact wrench because that is the only thing i can think of that would tighten it.

I think the spec is about 100ft-lbs. You got to put the hate to it but an impact wrench would scare me. It is bolting to the crank. If you screw something up, you are screwed.

i know, i have it as tight as i can get it and now the engine is spinning over with a torque wrench at about 40 ftlbs of torque.

but if i am at my wits end about how to torque this thing and i figure if i hit it with the impact in short bursts enough that i can turn the nut counterclockwise and it not break loose but spin the engine it should be good to go

i guess i could try bolt some flat stock to the pulley bolts and then bracing it against the frame or something but what a pita

i am assuming its in the car?

you could pull the starter and jam the ring gear with a big screwdriver but you'll need a mate to help.

I'm pretty certain the balancer only needs to be 60lbs so you're nearly there[8D]

that might work
looks like i am teaching wife to use a torque wrench.
unless i can talk her into crawling under the car with a big screwdriver

Pulling the access plate and jamming it there is easier than dropping the starter. Not?

Yep. Throw a 9/16 socket on the torque convertor bolt. Or if the oil pan is off, you can put a large socket between one of the counterbalances and engine block. But when your done, remember to TAKE IT OUT ! Lol.

You guys are making this WAY too hard, heh. Install two of the three (or 4, if it's a 68+) pulley bolts on the front of the balancer until they each stick out about 1-1/2". Finaggle a large pry bar in between them and use that as your leverage to hold the crank in place. Then you can torque away IIRC, torque is something like 90ft-lbs, but go get your shop manual out and double check:P
