i though the c9 in the beginning of the casting numbers ment 69, because C was for the 60's, and 9 was the ninth year, which means it a 69 block which would be a 302 wouldn't it?

You are correct, it's a 69 block. I'm not sure what size though. The only cross reff. I can find says it's a 351w.

Rattlehead. Looks like you've got a 351 C from a 1969 Fairlane/Torino. Check out this web site

thanks alot marty, and all others! for the help, wow i didnt know the 289/302 were so similar to the 351 style engine,,now one thing has me baffled about this ,,i read somewhere about external signs of the two,and someone said the bottom thermostat bolt on the 302 you cant get a socket on as for the 351 you can because of the deck heights? mine you cant?????

If the theremostat houseing is on the intake it deafently ant a 351c . The 351c has it into the block

Hear is the fail safe way to tell the 302 from 351 . look at the joint whare the head meets the block on the front . on the 302 the timeing cover is almost touching joint . on the 351w it has about 1/2" gap betewwn them . and the intake is a lot bigger on a windsor

It can not be a 289 , they stoped makeing them in 1968 or C8OE

ok heres the skinny,,,from what ive learned from others ,i have a 302 out of a 1969 fairlane or torino, whats wierd is that when i looked the code up from a link in a previous post these casting numbers pointed towards a cleveland? but the fail safe way proved that wrong! my thermostat housing bolts to the intake, and the timing cover almost touches the joint at the block and head,so with that out of the way lol how does 150 to 152 psi per cyl sound for a compression check?can i calculate comp ratio with these numbers?thanks for the exellent advise!tom

I don't think they made 351Cs in 69, even though many think so. I heard too many guys talk about a 69 mach1 with a 351C, but when I press them, it was a 351W afterall. This bugs me almost as bad as those who refer to a commom 302 as a Boss 302...[:@]
