I think the best thing to do would be to purchase an aftermarket stock looking radio. Most of the aftermarket radios fit great and come with fm and rc cables to hook in your ipod or mp3.
You might look into Secret Audio, Hidden Radio & CD Changer type products.
Have seen them around in friends cars and on the net but I have not investigated them much at all personally.
My Stang does not have the original radio so eventually I am going to get one of the USA66 radios that looks like the original radio but has an outlet to plug in an ipod or CD changer, etc on the back of the unit.

I don't think anything will work through your AM.
I put a retro unit in mine before the I Pod Plug became standard. I use a cassette adapter and plug my I Pod into that.
A retro unit w/o C/D changer should cost less than $250. Add the C/D changer and it bumps to about $400. Save your AM if you want the original radio and put in a retro unit. Quick, easy, looks good, works good. Shop around I have seen anything from 100 watt to 250 watt. You will also need to replace your single cone dash speaker with a drop in replacement dual cone unit. These run about $35. The new units need a dual speaker to work properly. (Thanks Maryland Mustang for not telling me this when I bought my radio from you).
Hidden Audio fits under the dash or in the glove box and comes with a remote. I have seen them at shows and on TV. Never used one though.
