warped flywheel?
Hi everyone, I have a '68 302 auto that i just bought a remanufactured longblock for. I removed the old engine in order to sandblast the engine bay. When i pulled the engine,I left the flywheel and the torque converter attached to the motor and teft the trans. in the car. While looking at the old motor, i noticed that the flywheel seems to be warped. If you are looking at a side profile of the engine, the flywheel seems to be wavy. Has anyone here ever heard of this or know what may cause it? Also, what are some possible symptoms of this? Any help/advice would be appreciated...
A warped flywheel will cause a studdering or jumpping in the drive train. It is not a good thing and needs to be fixed either by resurfacing or replacing.. You can check the warpage by fastening a dial indicator to the block with the tip ont he flywheel and then turning it and watching how much the indicator moves.....about .002 inch is ok, anything more and its a resurface or replace.
I went to take the torque converter off the flexplate so I could replace the flexplate and after finding out that whoever put this thing together rounded the hell out of the t/c nuts, I discovered that the flexplate was indexed wrong and the holes for the torque converter drainplugs in the flexplate were not lined up and it was the plug causing the warpage. When I took the torque converter off, the flexplate straightened back to perfect.
