Interior dash paint question
I have a 66 with black pony interior-my dash is a "flat" black looking color. My doors are painted black but it looks like a gloss black.I have a can of 64-66 ford black semi gloss #L-946 that I bought from VA Mustang...is this the correct paint for the dash?
I used this paint on the sterring column a while black and it is not as glossy as the black on the interior doors.I dont have any of the glossy black door paint.
what is correct for the dash? should it match the doors?
I saw a beautiful 66 GT at a show and the dash was a glossy red that matched his doors. It looked really sharp.
Thanks Scott

The paint you purchased from VA Mustang should be a lacquer. If it is then it should be right for the dash and the interior of the doors. Lacquer is what was used originally and was used for the entire interior. You will need to sand and etch the current paint prior to finishing and plan on priming prior to applying lacquer because lacquer is a hot paint and you will have separation and or orange peel. You can use any good primers other than enamels. Make sure you have good coverage and let dry over night before finish coat. Use a 200 grit or finer sand paper and get rid of all dust before finishing. When you start your painting with your lacquer make sure you have good coverage. You do not want to second coat. It can burn the first coat. Lacquer is very easy to use and covers really well.
You'll need to use stripper and a wire brush on the doors, or media blast them.
You don't want to wear down the texture by sanding and sanding won't remove all paint from the groves in texture.
Paint the doors with Lacquer because it is a thin coat and use just enough so you don't fill the texture.
