Default mechanical fuel pump question

I have been having problems with my Mach 1 (70) dieing on me after about a half hour. I was able to duplicate the stall in the driveway today and rushed to check the fule line durring the stall. I pulled the fuel line and turned her over... No fuel, then sputter, then no fuel. The pump is mechanical so you'd think it either works or it doesn't. Can the pump heat up to the point it won't work anymore? The car starts again after a couple hours and the car cools. Durring idol she purrs fantastic for about a half hour. FYI I have installed a new Holley 600 cfm, new fuel filter, new petronix ignition, rotor, rotor cap, wires and plugs, and a new flame thrower coil. not much left to replace but the fuel pump. Any ideas?

Makre sure there are no kinks coming from the tank and that the fuel line is secure so that it's not sucking air in on the suction side. Also pull the dipstick and smell the oil, if it smells like gasoline then the pump diaphragm is ruptured and you need a new pump.

Thanks. I pulled the dipstick and... smells like gas. Not looking forward to pulling the pump. She has AC and the compressor is in the way. Probably a 12 pack day.
