Default 68 Mustang

Hey I am over from the 5.0 section. My father has located a 68 mustang through a friend. Some old lady has it parked in her garage with stuff piled on top of it. The condition of it is unknown at this point. I know it has a 289. I don't know whether it is a fast back or not. I know it was running 10 years ago when it is parked. I have yet to look at it but my father and I are going to try and get it for like 1500. I had some general questions though. How much horsepower did the 289 make? What carb? I know there is a 4 speed manual and a 3 speed automatic? What transmissions are those 2. What size rear and what factory gear sets? Basically general stuff or if there is a good website for info I would appreciate the help.

Thanks guys.

If it is a fastback it will be a steal for 1500.

The only real question that didn't answer of mine was what factory rears? I assume all v8s had disc brakes? Is the automatic any good? Can it stand power? How would a c4 fit in?

Disc was an option. So it will most likely come with drums. It really depends if you like auto cars. My 67 is a 3 speed manual. It can stand the power. A C4 should fit with no trouble, I would go with the T5 if possible.

Rear ratios

1 > 2.75:1
2 > 2.79:1
4 > 3.83:1
5 > 3.00:1
6 > 3.20:1
7 > 3.25:1
8 > 3.50:1
9 > 3.10:1
E > 3.00:1 (limited-slip)
F > 3.20:1 (limited-slip)
G > 3.25:1 (limited-slip)
H > 3.50:1 (limited-slip)

So a c4 is a direct swap in?

Yeah, roof dents suck! You're better off passing on it. The 68.5 CJ cars are everywhere...

To the OP, not only is the C4 a direct swap, it's the standard factory transmission for an automatic car with a SB motor. If the car was a big block (FE motor), they'll be a C6 behind it.

The 4 speed manual trans in '68 would be a toploader and is pretty much indestructable.

Unless rust has taken ahold of her real bad, $1500 would be a very good price.... running or not.
