Fast idle at start
When I first crank my car up when it is cold it idles very fast until I tap the gas pedal and then it calms down. I know it will idle faster until it warms up but it seems way to fast. Do I need to adjust the choke cap? I have it set in the middle.
There is a "fast idle" adjustment screw you can adjust to decrease (or increase if ever needed) the cold idle. As you described, the fast idle linkage disengages once the throttle is opened. It re-engages with the choke.
The fast idle cam is located on the same side of the carb as the choke. I will look for a more descriptive picture. It is an easy job for you.
Good luck.

See photo attached (thanks to AutoZone). You may need to adjust the choke as well, but that's easier to set via butterfly position. Did you just rebuild the carb? These don't usually need adjustments once dialed in. Lastly, I have assumed you have a Autolite 2100 (or motorcraft 2150).
Good luck.
Good luck.
