My first mustang!!
Have you straightened out your paperwork on this car? Have you applied for a title and registered it yet?
I've had the Pertronix Ignition system in my car for over 10 years with absolutely no trouble at all.
Points are a mechanical device that is subject to wear and tear and may require adjustment from time to time.
Pertronix is a rotating magnet and an electronic switch that never needs adjustment.

Okay I am planning on trying to start it today to see if it will turn over. I just have a couple real quick questions to make sure I know what I'm doing. First: I am buying a negative battery cable, where can I ground it to that would just be temporary for today? Second: To diconnect the gas line, is the fuel pump in the tank, if so, do I drop the tank and disconnect from there or can I do it somewhere else. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Q
One more question. Since I don't have the keys yet, can anyone tell me exactly where to start it from the engine bay and how to do it? Thanks

Before starting... I would suggest a few things..
1) check oil in engine.. possilble change oil..
2) disconnect the fuel line coming into the fuel pump... You can connect a new line and just put it down into a 1 gallon can of gas..
3) Check gas filter...
4) Check/charge battery...
5) Have fire extinguisher and friend ready..
good luck..

The previous owner really tried to fix parts. It looked like he took time and things were rusting faster than he could fix them. Here is something to consider. If you plan to completely restore this car you might want to forget trying to start it. Just take it completely apart except for the wheels. Go and get it blasted. Then you will have a true picture of what needs to be repaired. Take lots of pictures. Then buy a cheap spray gun and coat the car with an epoxy primer. Then you can take your time to repair the car. Once you have a good body and frame, the assembly will be much more fun. You can take the engine out, take it apart. Take the block and rotating assembly to a machine shop and have them check it out. If it is too expensive you can find another I-6 for cheap. I saw one for free on craigslist.com. Anyways, if you decide to go V-8 you need to replace the drivetrain, brakes, suspension, etc. You might as well take it to the bare body, blast it and put her together right. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks RGH69 for the suggestions. I got a quote yesterday on the body. It will be $4500 to do the whole body up to the primer stage. That includes right fender, floor pans, and treating the rust (getting it out and preventing more). The bondo that you see on the car is not from rust coverup (there's some but not the reason for the bondo) it is because the car was hit in the back and wrinkled the rear "valnce". The people then had it pulled out some and the bondoed to cover the "wrinkles" up.So, the only thing that actually needs replaced is floor pans, right fender, and rear valance. The side arms are still really good and everything else is good. I was just trying to get it to turn over, I wasn't going to run it over like 2- 3 minutes if that. Thanks for suggesting though. Does anyone know how to key the ignition switch on the interior dash off so I can take it to the locksmith and get keys made?
Ok, I thought you were going to do the work yourself. $4500 is pretty cheap to pay someone to do everything if they do it right. My son and I are resoring a 70 fastback and we are doing everything ourselves. We have had it over a year and are just about finished with the body. It has been a lot of fun. Anyways if you want to just turn it over you can jump the solenoid. Get something like this;

Then you can safely crank the motor while under the hood. It comes with instructions.
Here is a link to the ignition wiring diagram;

And to remove the ignition switch you need a key to turn it to the ACC position. You may have to get the locksmith to pick the lock then you can do the procedure below;
